Our Methods and Philosophy
At our organisation, we employ a range of approaches to support black professionals and other minority groups in navigating the complexities of the workplace. Our approach combines insights from psychoanalysis, group relations, and systems theory to understand and address the unconscious processes that influence individual and organisational behaviour.
Understanding System Psychodynamics
System psychodynamics is a framework that explores the interplay between the emotional experiences of individuals and the broader organisational and societal systems they are part of. It recognises that unconscious processes, such as projection, denial, and splitting, play a significant role in shaping behaviours, relationships, and organizational dynamics.

Projective Identification
This is a more complex process where the person receiving the projection begins to identify with and embody the projected feelings or thoughts. Black professionals might find themselves internalising the anxieties and biases projected onto them, and unknowingly believing these feelings are coming from themselves, which impacting their self-esteem and performance.
Projection
This occurs when individuals unconsciously attribut e their own unwanted feelings or thoughts to others. For example, a white colleague might project their own anxieties about race onto a black professional.
Containment
Containment refers to the capacity of an individual or organisation to hold and process difficult emotions without becoming overwhelmed by these emotions. Effective containment allows for the expression and exploration of anxieties, leading to healthier and more productive environments.
Social Defences
Interestingly organisations often develop what is called social defences to manage collective anxieties. These defences can show up as rigid structures, avoidance of difficult conversations, or scapegoating individuals who represent uncomfortable truths. Understanding these defences is a powerful tool that helps us address the root causes of organizational dysfunction.
