The Changing Workplace
Landscape
The cultural shift in the workplace landscape is undeniable. Black professionals are navigating systemic racism, micro-aggressions, and toxic work environments. According to Margin Leaders, black employees face significant barriers to advancement and representation. The Equality and Human Rights Commission reports that black workers are more likely to be in insecure employment and face higher rates of disciplinary action.
Exponential change has created exponential opportunity. The rise of AI, virtual working, and the gig economy are reshaping job profiles and increasing global competition. In truth, Margin Leaders provided me with guidance to address things I didn’t really know I needed, practical steps on how to approach the situation and what my rights were, what would stand, and what wasn’t OK for the manager to do and their ways of speaking to me. She provided me with a structured roll-out plan on how to go ahead with the grievance, the initial statement, and the outcomes that I wanted. She highlighted things I hadn’t thought about and helped me structure documents and correspondence. Fundamentally, I had continuous support that was crucial to being able to handle the situation.
Carole (Margin Leaders) helped and supported me to navigate one of the lowest points of my life when as a black woman, experienced and qualified in the field of safeguarding, I was being mercilessly bullied by my white manager at work. I was not protected by senior managers, and my manager was allowed to undermine me, micro manage, and emotionally abuse me to the point that I had to be signed off work with stress. She gaslit me and made my life hell! Carole helped me to communicate effectively in writing, challenge the abuse, manage my anxiety by channelling it into action, and ultimately worked with me to stop the bullying. Amazing and comprehensive support throughout the ordeal.
When I first faced this drawn-out challenge with my employer, I was overwhelmed and exhausted. Like many men, I’d spent years just absorbing pressure, keeping things in, and convincing myself that asking for help was a weakness. But reaching out to Margin Leaders turned out to be the most strategic move I could have made. From the start, they helped me reset what I’d been accepting for far too long. Their support gave me the clarity to see what was unacceptable, and the strength to stand up for myself. I began to take myself more seriously, and so did my employer. Having someone in my corner meant I didn’t have to carry the emotional weight alone. Each letter, each meeting, each decision became less about survival and more about reclaiming my dignity. Rather than defensively responding whilst stressed, I started responding with confidence. Margin Leaders is like a team around me - the kind of strategic support you’d expect the big players in business to have. They didn’t just help me stay in the fight; they helped me fight well. To be fair, I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know I wouldn’t have made it through without them. They gave me more than guidance - they gave me back my self-respect.
